OCC Program

The following programs are led by a Genentech Advanced Practice Nurse Clinical Coordinator:

  • Herceptin for HER2+ Breast Cancer
  • Provides an overview of the Herceptin (trastuzumab) indications, most common adverse events, dosing and administration guidelines, and efficacy and safety data from the pivotal trials in the adjuvant and metastatic settings (This information is also included in the programs below.)
  • Molecular Targets in Cancer Therapy and Herceptin for HER2+ Breast Cancer
  • Reviews molecular pathways and briefly introduces cancer therapies designed to specifically target cancer cells. Developed for an advanced audience
  • Management of Cardiac Effects of Herceptin for HER2+ Breast Cancer
  • Reviews the cardiac effects associated with Herceptin administration, and discusses the guidelines for monitoring and medically managing these events
  • The Biology and Treatment of Breast Cancer
  • Reviews the development and treatment of breast cancer, including HER2+ disease
  • Mechanisms for HER2 Signal Transduction
  • Explains HER2 dysregulation and dimerization, and receptor tyrosinekinase activation. Developed for an advanced audience
  • Interactive Case Studies of Patients on Herceptin for HER2+ Breast Cancer
  • Offers an interactive approach to the care of HER2+ breast cancer patients in the adjuvant and metastatic settings
  • Clinical Trials in Herceptin for HER2+ Breast Cancer
  • Reviews clinical trial terminology and processes, and summarizes the efficacy and safety data from the pivotal trials leading to FDA approval of Herceptin use in the adjuvant and metastatic settings
  • Understanding HER2+ Breast Cancer: An Informational Program for Patients
  • Provides an overview of HER2+ breast cancer for patients

Melanie Hobson, RN, BS, BSN, OCN

Melanie Hobson has been a registered nurse since 1993 and has spent the majority of her career in the field of Oncology. Melanie graduated from California State University, Fresno in 1990 with a Bachelor's Degree in Health Science. In 1993 she graduated with an additional Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Melanie worked at Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno for approximately 10 years. Her most recent position was that of a Unit Coordinator for a Medical Oncology Adult Inpatient Unit, and a very busy Outpatient Infusion Center. Melanie also has eight years of experience working in the Pharmaceutical Industry selling products in the Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Lung Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer markets. Melanie is an Oncology Certified Nurse and is a member of the Oncology Nurses Society. Melanie joined Genentech in October of 2001 and is currently working as a Nursing Field Manager for the HER Family Franchise.


Anne Winters, MS, APRN, BC, AOCNP

Anne Winters has been a registered nurse since 1984 and has spent the majority of her career caring for individuals with cancer. She also has experience working in research, intensive care, head pain management, and labor and delivery. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2004 with a Master of Science in Community Health Nursing and is certified as an advanced oncology nurse practitioner. She worked as a nurse practitioner with the bone marrow transplant team at the University of Michigan and then more recently, with the breast cancer program. Anne is currently the president of the Ann Arbor Chapter of the Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners, and is a member of the Oncology Nurses Society. Anne joined Genentech in January 2008 as an Oncology Clinical Coordinator and provides educational programs with a focus on lung, breast and pancreatic cancers.


MaryAnn Wood, RN, MSN, ACNP, AOCNP

MaryAnn is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with a clinical specialty in Oncology. She obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Pittsburgh in 1996 following a nursing career spanning 20 years. Her previous experience includes infusion therapy, post anesthesia recovery, management of open heart surgical patients, critical care and trauma, utilization management and staff education. Originally a diploma RN grad, she completed her BSN in 1990, fell in love with oncology as a specialty and has worked both as a clinician and educator in that field since. Upon completion of her MSN, she worked as an NP at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in the breast and GI oncology centers, managing patients on clinical trials where she was co-investigator on a number of research studies as well as guest lecturer at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing graduate program. In 2000 she joined Genentech as an Oncology Clinical Coordinator, providing education to health care practitioners on targeted therapies and patient management. She is a member of both ASCO and ONS, and is nationally certified as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner. MaryAnn is currently working as a Nursing Field Manager for the HER Family franchise and lives in Raleigh, North Carolina.
